Organic Imprints

Organic Imprints
1/9/2021 UPDATE: We have switched over to a new Organic Imprints page. Please submit all threads to the new post instead, thank you.

An imprint is any change made to the world caused by a character's influence. Anything that's been brought into existence within the world is considered an imprint, whether it's something pulled from a canon world or developed naturally through interactions with the setting and other characters.

As imprints are formed by a character's understanding and knowledge, they are not formed by conscious choice on their part. This enables players to implement elements of their character's world that, if given the choice, the character would not choose themselves.

For detailed information on what imprints are, the different categories of imprints, regains, and so on, please see the section for Influence & Imprints on the FAQ.

Organic Imprints are decided on solely by the mod team, but players may use this page to submit threads and character actions for consideration towards organic changes in the setting. Canon Imprints and Regains must instead be purchased through the Canon Imprints & Regains page using the influence system.

For information on imprints that are already in effect within the setting, please see the Locations, Bestiary and State Of The World pages.

Organic Imprints
As the setting grows, it becomes necessary to fill in gaps and make the pieces fit, and as such it will adapt to the characters who live in and influence it. This results in organic imprints - a shift in the setting’s understanding of the world, based on how characters interact with it.

Organic imprints do not cost any influence from the player, but are chosen by mod discretion only. Many, but not all, will be based on character conversations, debates and actions. Characters may also attempt to force a change through persistence and repetition of certain actions. Conscious attempts to alter the setting’s understanding of something will usually fail initially, but may succeed with persistence. If a particular idea is being explored by a large number of characters, it is also more likely to be picked up as an organic imprint.

To this end, we ask for players to submit threads which discuss or explore particular ideas that they wish to see expanded on. When submitting threads, please keep in mind that idle small talk is less likely to have as much influence as characters actively trying to make sense of or interacting with the setting.

If your character is making a physical change to an existing location, the form at the top of the Locations page should be used instead. Likewise, names for species should be submitted through the Bestiary page.

Submission Form
To submit a thread as consideration for organic imprints, leave a comment filling out the form below under the comment header for the current month. You may also respond to submissions left by other players if your character is exploring the same idea as them.

To help us find the relevant part of the thread, we ask that you link to the point in the thread where the topic is discussed.

Character(s): Add (& Zack, Viridi, Turing, Legion so far, possibly others!)

Idea: Electronics can be powered by electricity and shouldn't just work/stop working based on something stupid like the weather

Thread description: Add is trying to charge some electronics via lightning strikes! To help with this goal, he has also built a crude lightning rod on the roof of the Merlaut and piled some shit up there to experiment with. He has also attributed Dynamo suddenly working again to possibly being a result of these experiments, since he let himself get hit a few times as well.

Link: This log, but more specifically the first two prompts. Also mentioned in conversation here!

Character(s): Samuel Oak, Izuku Midoriya, Goro Akechi, Crystal Exarch, Legion, Rinoa Heartilly

Idea: Disease and infection are caused by "microbes", tiny lifeforms too small to see with the naked eye. Microbes live in filth and water and can be killed by heat and alcohol.
Thread description:

When Professor Oak is bitten by a Piranha-Stubby on his first day in the void, he worries about and takes measures against possible infection. In some of his interactions, the topic of infection actually comes up in conversation.

When Rinoa climbs on trash, Sam worries that she might cut herself and get infected because the trash is so dirty.

When making bandages for wounded animals out of strips of fabric, Sam first boils them to disnfect them.

When Rinoa claims a soggy couch from Takoba Beach, Sam is worried that it might carry mold or mildew. They briefly discuss microbes in general.
